Samuel Jackson is one bad mothafucka
The Rules of Engagement was playing on TV tonight. After it ended, I was in the mood to see another Samuel Jackson movie, so i say "I wanna watch Shaft". 5 seconds later, while the credits were rolling some guy on tv announces "next up on TNT: Shaft" That is all | | Tuesday, October 25th, 2005 | | 9:19 pm |
Reminiscence (sp?)
Yesterday night at 10:30, it was a chilly 45 degrees outside. I leave the front door of my residence hall and look out at the main quad. In the pitch-black silent night, with cars parked around the circle and streetlights distributed poorly around the quad, I suddently have a flashback to last year in Wisconsin, freezing as I walk out to the gym circle after basketball practice is over in the evening. Half expecting my Audi to be on the far side of the gym circle like it normally was, I take a step in that direction without realizing that I needed to go in the opposite direction. Even tho I'm having an absolute blast here, it's times like these that I really can't wait to see everyone again during thanksgiving break. another big one
lots has happened over the past few weeks, and i certainly can't touch on everything I've realized that my schedule is way too ez... i better beef it up next semester random thought: so far, this season of the O.C. sucks balls for my bday, i saw snatch with some desi friends i made over the past week and a half, and then went with them and some friends from my dorm to the mall. i got some shoes and nice sandals and Elton John's Greatet Hits 1970-2002 (AMAZING CD), and a bunch of guys went into some stores looking for clothes (yea, that's right: guys). After looking at those prices, i realized how much i miss the Kohls back home. Then we got back to the dorm: we fit 14 ppl into 2 cars... the car i was in got back first. When the guys in the other car got back to the dorm, they told me they got pulled over for having too many ppl in the car, and that they were fined 150 bucks. they said the girl that was driving was angry/upset, so i went to apologize to her. as i started apologizing, she started to smile and i realized right then that it was a joke. jackasses. i chatted with her for a while as we waited for the desis to come back with sholay (a bollywood classic we wanted to watch that evening) and a "surprise" bday cake. she's incredibly cool (and cute) Last Friday, the MSA (muslim student association) had freshmen rep elections... I was elected as one of the reps... a girl that i'm interested in was elected as the other rep :p Lastly, Ramadan started Tuesday. Duke's staff is awesome: for the first time at duke, they are going to open up the Marketplace (where freshmen eat their meals) for Muslims to eat breakfast at 5:30 before starting their fast. Actually, one more thing: i'm coming back to Wisconsin for fall break this weekend (saturday-tuesday). can't wait. Duke
Well, I've been here for eight days now. And it's amazing. There's just too much to talk about in one post. This campus is beautiful....the Chapel still astounds me every time i walk by it. My dorm is really close-knit (partly cuz we all stay in the air-conditioned common room to stay cool). There are 3 basketball gyms on the freshman campus alone...ppl are always playing, including Martynas Pocius, a freshman who's gonna play 2 guard for the bball team this year who I got to meet. Diya (The Indian Students Association) is great...they have a lot of stuff like dances and bollywood movie nights planned for this year, and it's always fun to meet cool (and hot, in the case of women) desis. The MSA (Muslim Studnets Association) is also great...they have meetings every Friday, and afterwards they hang out, watch movies, go bowling, or, like today, play bball. And like any good college campus, frisbee is widely available. But not as many chicks play ultimate here as i'd wish :p The ppl are great...my roommates are excellent, and people are finally being social in our dorm after shutting themselves in the their rooms the first 2 or 3 days. Classes are great (cept for the worlkload for hindi). All in all, it's a great feeeling when you wake up to a bright sunny day and see ppl outside ur window smiling and chatting as they walk to breakfast and classes, when there's ALWAYS someone to play bball with from 9-11 pm, and then hang out wherever and with whoever u want, then go to sleep after a long day knowing that (Godwilling) it's all gonna happen again the next day. O yea, and every tuesday and thursday an indian restaurant sets up a little booth at the food court to satisfy my weeklong craving for curry. But of course, with all this good, there is some bad. -No AC, and incredible heat for most of september...it's torture around 3 o'clock, walking halfway across west campus to get to class. -The food is waaaaay too expensive....we get 12 meals (5 breakfasts, 5 dinners, 2 brunches) every week for about 2k. We pay for lunches ourselves, seperately. -Being in a very Asian dorm, the amoutn of time these people spend studying and talking about classwork makes me very self-conscience about how much i fool around and worried about how i'll handle all these midterms and finals. -I miss WI...I miss listening to Nabil giggle and say new words, i (kinda) miss faisal and basir fighting with each other and me, i don't quite miss my parent's rules but i do miss the way they took care of me and made sure i maintained good habits (i dont' know how i'd live without these habits), i miss my audi (with AC), and i miss the guys (and girls). I was listening to "California" by Phantom Planet yesterday, and I kept on having flashbacks to jam sessions the summer before senior year, barbecues, basketball games, and just chillen with my closest friends. I don't miss all the stuff i've listed enough to have me yearning for home yet, but I will certainly not mind returning home October 8th (even if i miss the Rolling Stones concert...sorry Jono) Lastly, no, i haven't hooked up with anyone yet, and no, i haven't gotten wasted yet. bedtime Current Mood: relaxed | | Thursday, August 18th, 2005 | | 2:35 am |

Reasons why I'm a dork: 1) Videogames (i've spent a lot less time playing videogames this summer, but i still consider myself a gamer)...i bought the halo 2 soundtrack 2) I'm a closet science-fiction and fantasy fan: star wars series, dragonlance series, wheel of time series, dune, the list goes on 3) I bought books by voltaire and erasmus to read outside of school 4) I use livejournal 5) I spend way too much time on the computer 6) I'm a recovered Everquest addict Some of these are more geeky and nerdy than dorky, but i'm not quite sure what distinguishes a geek from a dork and a nerd. been reading "The World is Flat" by Thomas Friedman....great book treating on globalization, altho i don't quite agree that we should standardize every little facet of global digital communication as the ppl friedman interviews suggest...more thoughts later, i'm only on page 80 of 450... it's a dense book, sorry jono, i'll try to finish it well before i head off to durham so u can read it, but it might be worth getting ur own copy

parents' anniversary today...my mom married at age 18, i was born 2 days after she turned 19...sheesh after some intense frisbee at doctor's park, I went to look for anniversary presents at williams sonoma in bayshore with sol, who suggested the place, and proops. then we ate some pizza at the foodcourt while discussing religion... i learned that the Jews didn't actually kill Jesus, and that the Catholic Church recently absolved them of all blame for his death. random thought: it's really quite sad how dead bayshore mall has become...I hope all this construction is worth it. then I went to Jono's house and saw most of Dodgeball...that movie is golden, even after the 4th viewing Current Mood: sleepyCurrent Music: Coldplay - Talk | | Sunday, July 24th, 2005 | | 9:20 pm |

The first post in I don't know how long
aight...my summer so far in 1 post... my typical daily summer weekday goes a bit like this: 1) Wake up at 7:30, Go to the Islamic Society of Milwaukee summer school from 8:30-12:30...teach middle schooler/high schoolers Math (my specialty :) ), and on a few lucky days, school 'em in basketball instead of in math 2) Then, for the past three weekday afternoons, I started the work i'll be doing regularly after this summer school ends in 2 weeks...I'm working at the Metropolitan Urology Group next to Mayfair Mall...a family friend/my islamic school teacher hooked me up with the job...some days i get to watch actual cases (i got to see a biopsy...if u don't know what it is, look it up...quite interesting) and some days I organize charts and such...it's a really relaxed environment, and no one really cares what pace I work at...great place, not to mention that several fine looking ladies my age work there 3) Then after all work ends at 4, I jam to Ben Folds (his music has currently taken over my life) or some other fine band on the half-hour drive back home. Then at 5-6ish, the real fun begins with the weekly ultimate frisbee or bball game. If not one of these, I go on a bike-ride for a while. Then maybe some dinner and a movie, maybe some errands or school paperwork, some reading, then I call it a night. Repeat from step 1. That's my typical summer day, and i'm loving it now, some days that stick out... July 3rd at Jen's lakehouse: jimbo, jono, fil, max, and I went out to Jen's lakehouse...we kinda sat around all day, at some food, played some volleyball, chatted, sat around a fire and watched Jen's little brother and some ppl across the lake light lots of fireworks...I went waterskiing for the first time...that was incredibly exhilarating, and at several points painful. I managed to stay on after my 3rd attempt...the 4th or 5th time i did it, some waves kept making me jump up until I couldn't hold on; I flew 5 feet before landing in the water sideways. My arms were so sore afterward that when I tried to throw my lifejacket into a boat 3 feet in front of me, it fell 2 feet short. Gabriel's going away party: Gabriel is an incredibly silly guy, and I'm gonna miss seein him around, so the party was kinda bittersweet. I beat Jono in pool for once, tho, and I'd never been in Erica's swimming pool, which was also quite fun. Taste of Chicago: I drove down with Fil to some city in Illinois...from there, Casey (a friend from CTD), 2 of her friends, Fil, and I took a train to the Taste of Chicago fair...they ahve a huge, amazing fountain there...that was probably the coolest part of the fair...that and the chill live music. The fair was kinda lame cuz u hadda buy tickets for food, and u could only buy tickets in packs of 7 bucks' worth each, and 7 bucks couldn't possibly fill you up...but nevertheless, the music was good, the fountain beautiful, and it was fun seeing Casey again, and I had a nice chat with Fil to and from Illinois Summerfest: Summerfest has always kinda disgusted me, specially at night, with that pervasive stench, but certain stuff makes it worth coming over and over again...firstly, the corn on the cob is delicious...secondly, Ben Folds and Weezer were amazing (even tho I could see almost nothing of Ben Folds)...thirdly, the videogame tent was cool as always (the world champion of Halo 2 was there...believe it or not, that guy screen-looks SO DAMN MUCH) Aleem's housewarming party: Jawaad, Samia, and some other desi muslim friends and parents went to Aleem's new house by highland road...we played some basketball, ate, and chilled till 11:30, when almost everybody left. Aleem and I ended up chatting about what to expect from college till about 1 am, when my mom called and told me to get my ass home. Phew, I'm done hopefully i'll update more than once every month and a half Current Mood: yea, i'm chipperCurrent Music: Ben Folds Five - Jackson Tannery | | Sunday, May 22nd, 2005 | | 9:54 pm |
Tomorrow's Monday...and I Don't Care
The ever-beautiful weather continued today, so i decided to go outside on the porch and read for a while. I had read for about 10 minutes when I suddenly heard a burst and felt a stream of water pelt my head...Faisal had snuck outside and shot me with a supersoaker, like he had said he would do if I went outside (serves me right for thinkin he was joking)... He quickly ran into the woods surrounding the house while I, soaked, put on my sandles and started chasing after him...I promised him that I'd soak him sometime today, whether it was with his knowledge or in his sleep...right now, the only feasible way to avenge this day seems to be dousing him with water while he reads a book before he goes to sleep...fitting, eh? we'll c if i actually go through with this...i've been very lackadaisical and lazy this summer (comes with bein a graduate, i guess) Anywayz, beyond that, my day was basically a lot of reading outside, a bit inside, and seein ep 3 for the 2nd time. Haydenson's acting seems a bit better the 2nd time, but McGregor's acting seems worse the 2nd time. Portman's was just subpar as usual...and they didn't even make her look hot in this episode. The dialogue in this movie, like in ep 1 and 2, are still pretty bad, but they've gotten better as the movies progressed. Come to think of it, the dialogue in all 6 episodes were pretty bad...besides Han Solo's lines, basically, because Harrison Ford=Amazing Actor E3's over....the PS3 looks freakin amazing (sorry xbox 360) Current Mood: calmCurrent Music: The Beatles - Come Together | | Saturday, May 21st, 2005 | | 1:17 pm |
